Description
Serum, Androstenedione is a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, ovaries and testicles. It is responsible for the onset of sexual differentiation in males and development of male secondary sexual characteristics after the onset of puberty, including, deepening of voice, growth of facial hair, etc. Excess of androstenedione may result in ambiguous external genitalia (infants external genitals do not appear to be clearly either male or female), hirsutism (abnormal growth of facial hair in females), abnormal menstrual cycles in girls and precocious puberty (puberty before age of 9) in boys. Elevated levels are associated with adrenal cancer, some ovarian and testicular tumors, adrenocortical tumors and congenital adrenal hyperplasia., Non Fasting
Sample Required:
A blood sample is required to perform the Androstenedione (A4) serum test.
Test Time:
The Androstenedione (A4) serum test is typically processed in a clinical laboratory, and results may be available within a few days.
Test Normal Range:
Normal reference ranges may vary depending on factors like age and sex. In general, normal values for males and females are different due to the differences in hormone levels.
What is the Test?
The Androstenedione (A4) serum test measures the level of androstenedione, a hormone produced mainly by the adrenal glands and, to a lesser extent, by the ovaries and testes. Androstenedione is a precursor to hormones like testosterone and estradiol.
Test Procedure:
A medical professional will take a blood sample, typically from an arm vein. The blood sample is then sent to the laboratory to measure the level of androstenedione in the serum.
When to Take the Test:
The Androstenedione (A4) serum test may be ordered when there are signs of hormonal imbalances, such as abnormal hair growth, irregular menstrual cycles, or symptoms related to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Who Should Take This Test:
People experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalance, fertility issues, or suspected conditions related to androgen production may be recommended to take the Androstenedione (A4) serum test.
Precautions for Exceptional Cases:
Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, as hormone levels can be influenced by pregnancy.Discuss any prescription drugs or dietary supplements you use.
FAQs:
Q1: What is the significance of elevated Androstenedione levels?
A: Elevated levels might indicate conditions like PCOS or adrenal gland disorders. In order to identify the underlying reason, more testing is required.
Q2: Can this test diagnose PCOS?
A: Elevated Androstenedione levels can be a component of PCOS, but diagnosis usually involves multiple tests and clinical evaluation.
Q3: Is fasting required before the test?
A: Fasting is not usually required, but follow your doctor’s instructions regarding fasting or any other preparation.
Q4: Can this test be used to monitor testosterone levels?
A: While Androstenedione is a precursor to testosterone, it’s not a direct measure of testosterone levels. Testosterone itself is usually tested separately.
Q5: Can hormone medications affect test results?
A: Certain hormone medications might affect test results. It’s important to inform your doctor about any medications you’re taking before the test.
